For thousands upon thousands of years, the Owl has been looked at by mankind as a animalof great spiritual power. Since they hunt both during the day, and during the night, they have been given attributes by the human race that make them out to be familiars of wizards (harry potter, merlin, etc), as the bringers of death for some of the native American Indians, and as gods in many cultures.

The Greeks revered them, as did the Danes, as noble guides and messengers from the very gods themselves. The scientific name for the Eurasian Eagle Owl is indeed, “Bubo bubo”, probably named from their noted hooting, which takes place during dusk and dawn, their preferred hunting times. In reality, they are just a perfectly designed predatory bird. No malice. No intent to hurt or injure anything that they don’t want to eat in order to survive.

They are not magical, but they are wonderful. The male Eagle Owl can exert up to 1,600 pounds of pressure at the end of each talon, which is as large as a Jaguars. With this force, Eagle Owls have been known to take prey up to the size of small deer, though they prefer rabbits and rats. Owls like to swallow things whole !
Every morning, the well fed owl will disgorge a pellet, made up of the indigestible material from the prey item. From this, if you find one, you can tell what the owl has been feeding upon. Owls love pack rats, those animals who spread pestilence and disease constantly, and having one in your yard should be a sign of good luck. Not a sign of dark wizardry or death.
